Châlons-en-Champagne was indeed built along the Marne River, but in the middle of a marsh. Water is ever-present because, although the Marne has shifted its course several times as the city expanded, the lateral canal has been built alongside it.
The twelve mills of the cloth merchants and tanners during Châlons' heyday in the textile trade relied on the waterways of the Mau, the Nau, and the Moivre, which were also supplied during periods of low water by a connection to the Marne.
