Le Camp de la Vallée Moreau

In the fall of 1914, the front gradually stabilized in the Argonne forest. From this date, the organization in depth of the front will marry the rugged foothills of the wooded relief (engineering depots and sanitary organization, reserve and rest camps, etc.).

The Vallée Moreau camp is located between Vienne-le-Château and Binarville, 3km far from the line of fire in the Bois de la Gruerie. It hosted several reserve troops, including the 83rd Landwehr regiment. It is an instructive example of a development close to the front.

Exceptional site, restored with great fidelity and maintained by the Franco-German Souvenir and Safeguarding of Sites in Argonne Committee, it allows visitors to understand "life size" the daily life of the Argonne combatants, through the diversity of the structures presented : delousing station, barracks, cinema, underground galleries, laundry, latrines, railway, canteen...

The Gruerie ossuary and the national necropolises of Saint-Thomas d'Argonne and Harazée contain the bodies of French soldiers who fell in the area.

Good to know: bring warm clothes for the underground passages and suitable shoes.
