Dated from the 12th century, built in a Romanesque style, it has among other things a bell of 400 kg datinf back to 1508. It is raised on an artificial mound overhanging the fortified plain village, which rises to approximately 3.50 m above the river.
From 1850, campaigns to restore the church began, as the building was in a poor state of conservation. Unfortunately, during the 1st world war, it was hit by several bushfires which strongly impacted the structures by the power of their impacts. In fact, in 1919, emergency restorations were put in place and carried out by local services and prisoners of war. They repaired with materials recovered from the rubble.
In 1920, the church was classified as a Historic Monument.
The restoration of the church:
The previous restoration campaigns had been partial or carried out in a hurry and had not remedied the structural weaknesses of the building, when they had not made them worse.
The restoration of the Church of St Memmie in Baconnes was therefore essential, even urgent. It was therefore completely renovated in 2019.
